What to Know Before You Call an HVAC Company
What HVAC Techs Wish You Knew Before You Call
Let’s be real, when your HVAC system isn’t working the way it should, it’s frustrating. And by the time you’re calling HVAC companies like ours here at Dynamic Mechanical Services, you just want it fixed, fast.
Totally understandable.
But here’s the thing: behind the scenes, your HVAC technician is doing everything they can to troubleshoot and solve your problem as quickly and efficiently as possible. And there are a few key things we wish more folks knew before picking up the phone.
So, let’s pull back the curtain a bit. Here are the top things HVAC techs wish you knew before you call.
The More Details, The Better
Saying “My AC isn’t working” is kind of like telling your doctor “I don’t feel good”. It’s a start, but being more specific helps us bring the right tools and parts to help make repairs fast.
Some helpful things to describe could include:
- When the issue started (Suddenly? Gradually?)
- What exactly is (or isn’t) happening (No airflow? Blowing warm air? Weird noises?)
- Any error codes on thermostat or system panel
- If the issue seems to happen at certain times (e.g. only at night or when it’s humid)
Even telling us things that seem unrelated, like flickering lights or odd smells, can provide valuable clues.
Try Basic HVAC Troubleshooting First
We’re always happy to come out and take a look at your HVAC system, that’s our job! But sometimes, there are a few simple things you can check before you call that might just fix the problem and save you a bit of time and money. Give these a shot first:
- Thermostat Settings: Make sure it’s set to “heat” or “cool” like you want it, and that the temperature is where you set it. And if it’s got batteries, maybe try swapping them out. You’d be surprised!
- Breaker Box: Sometimes, a tripped breaker is the culprit. If it’s flipped you can reset it but don’t keep doing this if it trips again, it could indicate a bigger issue.
- Air Filter: A clogged filter can stop the air from flowing right and mess with your heating and cooling. If your filter looks gnarly, changing it out might fix your problem.
- Vents and Returns: It seems simple but you’d be surprised how many people accidently cover their vents! Make sure your furniture or rugs aren’t blocking the vents where the air comes out or the return grilles where the air goes back in.
If none of that helps, call us, we’re ready to dig deeper.
Know Where Your System Is!
This one’s big: knowing the basic layout of your system.
That includes:
- The location of your thermostat
- Your indoor unit (furnace or air handler)
- Your outdoor condenser (for AC or heat pump systems)
- Your breaker panel
It sounds simple, but when we get there, if you can point us right in the right direction, it saves us a bunch of time, especially if it’s tucked away in some crawlspace or attic.
Don’t Wait for Disaster
We get it, most folks don’t call until something breaks down. But we always recommend getting routine HVAC check-ups and maintenance. Think of it like a tune-up for your car! It keeps things running smoothly, helps you avoid mid-summer or dead-of-winter breakdowns, and extends the life of your system.
Plus, we can often catch little problems before they turn into big, expensive headaches during routine maintenance checkups.
Pets, Parking, and Access
Before your tech shows up, try to:
- Clear the area around indoor and outdoor units
- Keep your pets safe and out of the way (they’re cute but curious!)
- Move vehicles that might be blocking access to equipment
And if you’re not going to be home, make sure someone who can answer questions or authorize work is available by phone. It helps avoid delays and return visits.
Know Your System’s History
If you’ve had work done on your system recently, or if your system has been acting a little funny throughout the years, telling us about it helps our team figure out what’s going on faster. Things like:
- When was the last time someone looked at it?
- When was your system installed?
- Did they replace any parts recently?
- Has it been making weird noises or acting weird?
Even if you don’t remember all the details, any background info you can give us makes our job a whole lot easier.
